Question:

Does anyone have any tidbits of information concerning that crash ? It seemed to be a very major crash, considering that 747s don’t generally fall out of the sky without warning, yet the media are ignoring this (partly because it didn’t happen in the USA).

You seem to be right. I sometimes check out www.airdisaster.com and there doesn’t appear to be any update there. However, this web site does have a forum which you could ask and.or perhaps start a forum subject on. Then again, everyone who probably subscribes to that also subscribes to this NG.

apparently a failure of a tail strike repair (similar but not identical to what happend to the Japanese 747 years ago.)  It looks like the stainless steel plate transferred the loads into the structure and produced fatigue cracks that weren’t caught at the D check.  Aft pressure bulkhead apparently blew off intact except for 1 segment (from the news reports, nothing not public)
