Registering (New question)

Question:

Why not register for some things at Dillards and others at Macy’s?  Or, you could "split" you quantities, i.e. register for 6 place settings of your china place settings at Macy’s and 6 at Dillard’s, register for 6 wine glasses, champagne flutes, water goblets  at Macy’s and 6 at Dillards’, etc. etc.  If all six at Macy’s get spoken for, and no one has bought you any at Dillard’s, you could reduce your Dillard’s numbers to 4 or 3 and add another 4 or 3 to the Macy’s registry.   – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Ok.  I need some feedback.  My fiance and I live in Arizona and that is > where the wedding will be.  We are planning on registering at Target and > a department store.  About 25% of the quests are from Ilinois, New York, > etc.  We would like to register at Dillards or Macys.  Dillards is a > regional store that is mainly limited in Arizona.  This would be our > first choice, but if we do so, those persons out of state will not have > access to the store.  We would then pick Macys, but I read so much > negative stuff about them that I am VERY hesitant to register there.  The > guests from out of state are mostly, older, very traditional and > "registry dependant" as my mother calls it.   > So which do you recommend? What’s the negative stuff?!! Someone let me know before I register! PS> The Dillards Family lives in Little Rock, AR and most of their stores are in the south and some midwest.

Response:

I had no problem registering at Macy’s EXCEPT that the prices don’t print out on the list.  This means that you have to go to each item and see how much it costs to decide if you want to buy it.  A minor inconvenience, but….the prices were a bit lower than Dillard’s but I registered at both, and Crate and Barrel and the Pottery Barn too :) )). My fiancee and I were thinking of registering at Macy’s.  What are the horror stories?

If you like Dillard’s better, ask if they have an 800 number your guests can contact to order gifts for you. They will probably also be able to have them wrapped and shipped. If there is an 800 number available, by all means, register at the store you prefer. –jeniphir — "I think I should like to rage   |  Goth Code v.3.1A:GoAu6FA6 through life–this orthodox      |  TTgGlAn10 PRDrPr B15/35Bk"1 creeping is too tame for me."    |  cBk(Br)-w8 V4s M3 ZGooFanClb C6o                                  |  w6L v3M r3EBi

At least on this forum, the bad reviews for Macys far outweigh the good. Dillards may be more spread out than you think; here’s a list from their web site: http://www.azstarnet.com/dillards/       Alabama       Arizona       Arkansas       California       Colorado       Florida       Georgia       Illinois       Indiana       Iowa       Kansas       Kentucky       Louisiana       Mississippi       Missouri       Nebraska       Nevada       New Mexico       North Carolina       Ohio       Oklahoma       South Carolina       Tennessee       Texas       Utah       Virginia       Wyoming Of course, the stores aren’t at every mall in the state like a Sears or Penneys, but the web site has a lot of information about their bridal registry. (http://www.azstarnet.com/dillards/bridal/) If your out-of-town guests are traditionalists and want to give china, flatware, and crystal (rather than sheets and towels) consider registering at one of the mail-order catalogs.  The prices are generally *much* better than the department stores, a number of patterns have free shipping, and if Aunt Martha *really* wants to see what she’s buying, the store will mail a catalog at her request.  I have a list of the places I usually call when I’m shopping for wedding gifts: http://aspire.cs.uah.edu/~mccraryj/newchina.html Good luck! -Josie — Josie

As someone who has family in Il and FL, I understand your predicament….  I know it sounds weird, but from everything I have heard here, JC Penney may be your best bet.  It’s nationwide and all I have read here have been raves about it’s quality and service.  If you still don’t like that option, my second suggestion is to check with both of your stores to see if they cross register with other major department stores that in areas that they don’t cover.  I understand your wish for Macy’s or Dillard’s — I love them both, but alas, being in Chicago I have to love them from afar (they are in florida — Dillards is mostly a southern chain). I know there are cross registries out there.. Just start calling! Hope this helps.. Beep

Sarah & Kevin 2/21/98 Go to JCPenney’s if they carry your patterns.  They had almost everything I wanted except my casual stuff.  Only one order got mixed up, and I thought that was pretty good considering all the people who bought gifts from Penney’s. kloa, Sayre, PA

Ok.  I need some feedback.  My fiance and I live in Arizona and that is where the wedding will be.  We are planning on registering at Target and a department store.  About 25% of the quests are from Ilinois, New York, etc.  We would like to register at Dillards or Macys.  Dillards is a regional store that is mainly limited in Arizona.  This would be our first choice, but if we do so, those persons out of state will not have access to the store.  We would then pick Macys, but I read so much negative stuff about them that I am VERY hesitant to register there.  The guests from out of state are mostly, older, very traditional and "registry dependant" as my mother calls it.   So which do you recommend? > Dillards is a regional store that is mainly limited in Arizona.

Huh? I’ve seen Dillards in Missouri, Kansas, West Virginia. . . though not, alas, in NY (haven’t looked in IL) and I sure wish we had one here in MN! Ask your local Dillards if they are affiliated with any other department stores. . . this sounds weird, but Dayton’s (based here in Minneapolis) also owns Hudson’s, Marshall Field’s, Mervyn’s, and Target, and some cross-use of credit cards, registrations, etc., is possible.

Response:

Like someone else said, Service Merchandise is good for houseware staples and it is nationwide, and they have a computer registry. How about Home Depot?  They have a registry. For more upscale kitchen stuff, there’s Williams Sonoma. Crate n Barrel (although I don’t know if they have a registry) Pottery Barn has stores in many major cities, but they also have a catalog that circulates nationwide. REI is scattered about the country and has a registry, if you’re the outdoorsy type. Lands’ End and LLBean have catalogs. JCPenney is fine, particularly for towels and linens and stuff. I haven’t registered for *anything* yet, so I don’t know the relative merits of the different outfits.  Bear in mind, I personally detest the idea of getting a "china pattern"  as a wedding gift, so  my suggestions are colored by that. Good luck! Tamara
