Hi Jennifer, We registered at Penney’s and most of the gifts I received for my shower came off of that registry. The only real problem I had was tow *very* pushy sales people at the registration. They signed both Shawn & I up for some things we had no interest in, then when I called to take them off the registry, I was asked "why." The whole registry experience kind of annoyed me, and the word "commission" ran through my head a lot!
Other than that, I haven’t had many complaints. Purchasing off of the registry must be somewhat simple, as I’ve said, most of my shower gifts were things we’d registered for. Our only other option (because of family location & store availability) was Sears. Although we haven’t received anything off of this registry, they are very simple to use!! And I think they had a great selection…if our money wasn’t going to a wedding, we’d probably be shopping Sears quite often
Not only were we on our own (read: no sales pressure) in registering there, I thought they were a little better with their prices as well. Good Luck & have fun!! Joy

Do you happen to know *where* on their web site I can find the store locator? I looked and looked, but couldn’t find it. Jennifer (and Brian) July 15, 2000

I used Penney’s and Mikasa. Penney’s was great… Mikasa was not. I believe that there are a lot of Penney’s stores across the country. Also, they have a catalog, so people can use that as well. There were only two issues. One- sometimes they didn’t update the registry fast enough, so I got a LOT of towel at my shower. Two- not all products are in all stores. As as added bonus, they use the little scanner gun and my FH just loved that. meister. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Has anyone here used JC Penney for their registry? My apologies — I may have been thinking of another site. I just looked at their web site and it is *completely* different from the way it looked three months ago. I should have checked it before telling you what is on it! The closest thing I found today to a list of stores was a list of district offices at http://www.jcpenneyinc.com/company/career/dist.htm, which I got to by following Company Information — Career Opportunities — Where We are Located — District Offices. They will probably be able to either give you a list of locations, or look cities up in a book, if you can go into the store and talk to a bridal registry person. — Katherine Sullivan Nortel Networks

I used it and I like it because people can order directly from the website at www.jcpgift.com and from the catalog. Unfortunately, hardly anyone even knows that I am registered there because my aunt keeps telling everyone Target, which is the other store we registered at! But we did love looking through that huge catalog and picking out bedding, towels, silverware, etc. I’d say it was definitely a good experience. Jenny

My friend registered at Penny’s. I found when I went to the store near me (she lives 2 hours away), they didn’t carry a lot of the particular styles/colors of things on her registry. It wasn’t that big a deal, just a bit of a hassle. Probably just a problem with the store near me. Actually, in some places, Penny’s stores are few and far between, but that shouldn’t be a problem with the catalog service that they have. THe Penny’s in my small town is quite small, and more often than not when we want something specific, we always go back to the catalog department. My roommate, who works for Penny’s says you can get anything from the catalog delivered to any store. I suggest registry shopping from the catalog. Register at the store, but also give a copy of the list to your parents or someone hosting the wedding. This person can then spread the news that you are registered at Penny’s. My roomie suggests that the person who has the list be given several copies of the catalog, also, in order to mail to those who live too far away. Good luck! Marian and Barry November 24th, 1999

Definitely a common problem-most stores do differ on in-stock items. Use the catalog service if you can’t find something. Everything can be found in the catalog, which is really nice for people who aren’t near stores or who cannot get out of the house. Its a great service. — Marian and Barry November 24th, 1999

I don’t know about where Penney’s does or does not have stores, but my husband and I were happy with our registry experiences there. We didn’t want to go in and talk to a consultant, so I just picked up the registry form along with the registry catalog, filled it out and mailed it in, no problem. You can also get their LARGE catalog for $5 and use that to register too, although that does mean not everything will be in the store for people to buy. We didn’t get any hassles about returning items, either. The good thing is we were able to get cash back rather than store credit if we wanted. One thing we did do was to visit Target (the other place we registered at) and comparison shop to see if similar items were available and for what prices. If we saw an item we wanted, and it was cheaper at Target, we registered for it there rather than Penney’s. Sometimes that was the case, although we did get our linens from Penney’s, because it seemed like a higher quality. The only thing I sort of regret was not registering in person with my fiance, because that laser gun is fun to use, and it might’ve been easier to pick stuff out since you get to see everything in person. We just didn’t have the time or inclination. I disliked the tone of their registry catalog, which encourages you to register for huge amounts of stuff, regardless of whether or not you need it. For example, not everyone is going to need table settings for 12, complete with crystal stemware and barware. :P Just one picky point, I admit. Other than that, it was fine, and their webpage allows you to look at your registry as well as shop. Ariane

We used them, and it worked great. No problems with the registry at all.

Brian and I registered at both Penney’s and Sears. We ended up switching our towels from Sears to Penney’s because of the way the registries print out. Sears’ registry just lists that you want some number of this style number towel/wash cloth, etc. with nothing other than the style number to differentiate colors. Penney’s lists the number, the style number, and gives a description complete with color. On the other hand, we liked the selection of small appliances better at Sears, so we kept those there. As far as locations go, Penney’s works well for us. They have locations in each of the States we need for our families (Alaska, California, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Texas) Since we’ve only recently registered, I can’t give you any feedback on how well they keep track of items when they’re purchased yet. Hi Jennifer- We registered at Penney’s and found them to be very helpful and quick about updating things. They also had a good selection, although I thought they were limited to only a few brands (not several like I hoped) of some kitchen gadgets. I also liked them because I was able to get a little registry booklet which had china, flatware, kitchen appliances, bed linens, etc. in it – I filled out the registry form with the help of the booklet and the big catalog and dropped the form off at my local store (not near my hometown and guests). No salespeople with whom to bother, nor did I have to spend my entire day running around the store. Several guests used the registry, and I have been very happy with the sheets and towels from there (a year later, they still look nearly brand-new, and we use them often). -Sara:) married to Sam, 8/1/98

We used penney’s for our registry 3 years ago. It was a good experience for us and we chose to do so because of the same reasons you have said. I think they are nationwide and have catalog service availible if there are not stores close to your friends, family. There were no problems with duplicate gifts even though people were buying things all around the country, their computers were able to keep up with it. The only problem we came across was teasing about the fact that we registered at such a "non-classy" store. I happen to like Penny’s and they had the kitchen gadgets that we needed and many lovely crystal things. We are not "ritzy" people, so the things we wanted were mostly available there. We could not find a china pattern that we both liked, however. I have noticed that many of our Penney’s here have scaled back their kitchen dept. I don’t know if that is nationwide, but the catalog should still be available anyway. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Has anyone here used JC Penney for their registry? We finally got to Penney’s in the middle of the day when there was actually a consultant on duty (we went at 7pm the Saturday before, and no one could help us with the location information) The registry consultant was quite helpful, though the only information she had fully at her fingertips was the location of the HomeStores. She had to go back to the main computer, and pull off the ENTIRE list for her to look at. We had given her a listing of the states where we have friends and family, so she pulled those out for us to take home. Why she doesn’t have that information at her fingertips is beyond me, because the biggest reason for doing a registry for us is not that we MUST have items off the registry, but that our friends and family can have a frame of reference of what we prefer and what our style is. This was brought home to me so much this week. One of the ladies I work with has a granddaughter getting married. That particular side of the family has not been particularly close, and she really does not know what the couple prefers. They registered at 3 places, but only at local stores, no national stores at all. She had no frame of reference for the couple at all. So even if you don’t think you want to register, it really IS a favor for your out of town guests to have a reference for your tastes, and it is the responsibility of the couple to choose a store that most of your invited guests have access to. Thus, though we got much better service from the Dillard’s consultant, we will be registering from Penney’s because of their locations. Target and Sears just gave us the answer- we’re all over the US, I’m sure there’s a store there. There isn’t a Target closer than 2 hours to my parents, much less everyone else in my hometown, and no reference list to go by. Kohl’s has a listing on the back of thier registry information, as does Dillards. My experiences for your perusal! Marsha

We are registered at Target and JCPenney’s, and it has been fun and easy for both our guests and us alike.

I’m registered at JC Penny’s although I’m not at all sure anyone else knows! I opted not to include registry information in my invitations. I wouldn’t want anyone to think it was rude or improper. I spoke to a young woman at the registry desk one day. She gave me the Perfect Match wedding catalog & I bought one of the big catalogs. I brought them home and browsed the catalogs for some time before deciding on everything. I made up a list of everything I wanted on da computer and dropped it off with a sales associate. In about an hour I was home browsing the internet & was able to see my Registry online. Family and friends that visit my website regularly will find a link to the JC Penney Registry page. I have emailed a number of changes to the registry and within a day or two the changes have been made. It’s absolutely wonderful. I don’t know how friends and family will feel about having to order my gifts and having them shipped directly to me. Or if they wish to order the gifts and picking them up to bring to the wedding, but JC Penney is the only store that both South Carolina & Massachusetts have in common besides Sears and I didn’t want to register there. It’s a little out of the ordinary, i think, but the only solution i could come up with. -Kelly
Response:
Kelly – I didn’t include them in our invitations, either… to quote Ron, it is "vulgar"! The only way anyone knows where we are registered is by word of mouth only. Plus, many people who have given us gifts chose to use their own creative minds to come up with some wonderful wedding gifts that we never even thought of!

They have a web site that will tell you where they have stores. (It was the only department store that had branches near all our relatives.) You can check your registry via the web too, and order, I think. I believe it is www.jcpenney.com — no affiliation except as a satisfied customer. — Katherine Sullivan Nortel Networks
