Moving to DC area….

Categories: China

Question:

I think the closer you can stick to Dickerson/Frederick/Point of Rocks, the better luck you’ll have finding people that will rent to pets.  Most of the houses around Dickerson have decent size yards, and people out in the country are more likely to not have problems with renting to "kid" owners. We moved from Gaithersburg, where most of the rentals did not allow animals, to a speck on the map called Keedysville, where everyone has animals (it’s about 45 min away from Dickerson).  You may want to look at a town about a half hour away (Brunswick MD), since it is not too far from your work, put also has access to the interstate easily, and there is a real grocery store there (also a train station that would drop you right in Dickerson if you didn’t want to drive).  The Frederick real estate firm could help you with that. Where are you going to work? Neutron Products?  It’s the only company I know there.

Response:

I drive through Dickerson everyday.  Basically, it is one of those last strongholds of "rural" in/about Montgomery County.  From the WV line, it is about 30 miles.  More property for your dollar if you purchase; very limited rentals.  In the immediate area, you might consider townships such as Jefferson, Boyds, Barnesville, Adamstown (I’ve seen some houses for rent), Brunswick.  All are in a reasonable distance.  Costs will vary by homeowner for leased properties, but you can expect to pay a higher security deposit for animals.  Very frustrating when you do not own.  Bring all the references you can in WRITING to support your argument against a "maybe small animals" landlord.  I haven’t been in the rental market in years, but this is the land of high-cost of living.  Very shocking to folks that move here from the west, and definitely more expensive than Pittsburgh.  The WAshington Post runs classified ads on Sat & Sun that will take you all day to filter through, but it will give you an idea of prices in the area (although I would expect Frederick and Washington Counties in MD would be cheaper).  Going across the Potomac into VA, the prices just radically jump due to the proximity of Leesburg (one choice).  VA townships in commuting distance include Lucketts, Lovettsville, Hillsboro, Waterford (very expensive; like the china). Good luck. Contact local animal shelters. They may have a list of dog friendly buildings. Bob Maida Manassas,Va

Check out Poolesville, Clarksville, Boyds, areas south of Frederick (e.g., Buckeystown) and Dickerson itself. You could even look across the river in Lucketts, VA, though you will have to cross river at Point of Rocks or take the very scenic and reliable White’s Ferry. This area is pretty rural and very lovely, in the shadow of Sugarloaf Mountain, although starting to get somewhat built up. Avoid the inner suburbs becuse of congestion and high housing costs. I can’t help you with rentals as I don’t live near that area, but try a local realtor for assistance. Rental houses are available but I am not sure of the costs. If you are looking to buy you will have no problem with your dog. Gail Mackiernan (in Silver Spring, MD)

I am going to attempt the impossible – relocating to a strange city with not one, but two dogs, no prior knowledge of the area, and very little time!  sigh…    If anyone out there lives in or near Washington, DC; more specifically Rockville, Dickerson, Frederick or Germantown;  I will be eternally grateful for any information such as – dog friendly landlords, real estate companies, or general areas that are better for dogs than others. My new job is in Dickerson, Maryland, about 45 minutes from DC, and I am willing to drive as far as I have to if it means affordable housing that accepts my "kids".      Thanks, Jana, Jake and Lilly
