Macy's- kicking myself
Question:
Thanks for the post…I’m new to the group and didn’t know if I was the only person who had sworn to stay away from Macy’s for the rest of my life. I read an article either in Cosmo or Glamour, can’t remember which, one time about customer service at different department stores….Macy’s was far and away the worst of the bunch.

I went to the cashier located in the bridal registry/fine china section. When I told them that I wanted to return a duplicate gift, they sent me to the bridal registry to get the price and then they gave me the store credit. I also didn’t have problems getting the registry updated (removing/adding items to it). Carren Carren Loredo Northwestern University

If you hadn’t told them it was a duplicate gift, you wouldn’t have been able to return it at all. The only reason you got any leniency was because you are registered there. How did you end up with a duplicate anyway? If both gifts were bought at Macy’s, Macy’s isn’t doing their job correctly. >I >also didn’t have problems getting the registry updated (removing/adding items >to it).
Then you are a definite minority. Ron Ng Knows!

You only got the lowest selling price in the past 60 days for store credit, even if you had a gift receipt. Ron Ng Knows!

Hmmm…the store credit did not seem that low (in price). What surprised me was that they allowed me to return the gift without a receipt. Carren Carren Loredo Northwestern University

I loved Dillard’s when I was in college in Gainesville, but they didn’t have housewares at all. There’s only on Dillard’s, at a mall nowhere near me, in all of Dade County. Like many other national chains, I think they’ve had a problem figuring out how to market to the fragmented demographics in Dade County and just kind of stopped at the Broward County line. It took forever for Wal-Mart and Target to move into Miami. And Starbucks! The rest of the country was sick of them by the time we got the first one. Anyway, I digress. I’ll go check out the one Dillard’s (it’s pretty new) and maybe we can do that plus some other store like Crate & Barrel. It’s just that Burdines is so convenient – they’re everywhere. But I used to work there, and have a friend that still does, so I know about the problems Federated has caused. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->BTW, does this apply to other Federated department stores as well? > As far as Burdines is concerned, ever since they’ve become a part of the big > Federated picture and have merged their registries with Macy’s, there HAVE been > problems. > I don’t know where you are in Florida, but you may want to check out Dillards. > They have a new store opening soon (if not already) in Boca Raton and there may > be others in the state. As far as Burdines is concerned, ever since they’ve become a part of the big Federated picture and have merged their registries with Macy’s, there HAVE been problems. I don’t know where you are in Florida, but you may want to check out Dillards. They have a new store opening soon (if not already) in Boca Raton and there may be others in the state. Dillards has a housewares section comparable to or better than Burdines from my experience. Dillards also routinely discounts at least their Lenox china. Ron Ng Knows!

It’s http://www.cybercomm.net/~dale/macys/ BTW, does this apply to other Federated department stores as well? The big store in Florida is Burdines and we had been thinking of registering there because 1)it’s about the only department store in the area with a good home department, 2)it’s more our style than say, JC Penney’s and 3)we figured people in other parts of the country could go to their local Federated store, whatever it may be (Macy’s, Foley’s, Rich’s), and they’d have our registry. People I know who’ve registered at Burdines haven’t had any problems, but most of their gifts were purchased in Florida. And from the nightmares I’ve heard about Macy’s… > I’m kicking myself for not listening to all the people who warned > against Macy’s bridal registry! Xine, So far we’ve had no problems with our Macy’s registry. We received a duplicate item for a shower present, but I was able to return it to the store and get store credit, which we used that day. In fact I had to transfer several items from the Crate & Barrel registry to the Macy’s one because no one was shopping at Crate & Barrel. So far, so good… *crosses fingers* Carren Carren Loredo Northwestern University

I’m kicking myself for not listening to all the people who warned against Macy’s bridal registry! I guess I had to learn the hard way… I wondered a little bit why we only got a few things from our Macy’s registry, but everything plus over $300 in gift certificates from our Crate and Barrel registry… a friend spilled the beans this weekend, and told us that the few people who did shop at Macy’s found it difficult and unpleasant, and spread the word back to the various groups invited to the wedding. -xine, married 8/8/98 and *still* making long-distance calls every Tuesday at 10 am, trying to get a gift that Macy’s was paid for on 8/2/98.

Hopefully other brides will read about your experience and learn the easy way. People don’t make these things up about Macy’s. >I wondered a little bit why we only got a few things from our Macy’s >registry, but everything plus over $300 in gift certificates from our >Crate and Barrel registry… >a friend spilled the beans this weekend, and told us that the few >people who did shop at Macy’s found it difficult and unpleasant, >and spread the word back to the various groups invited to the wedding.
That’s true of almost every Macy’s across the country unfortunately. >-xine, married 8/8/98 and *still* making long-distance calls every >Tuesday at 10 am, trying to get a gift that Macy’s was paid for on 8/2/98.
Have you seen the anti-Macy’s web page? I do not have the URL handy but if you search Yahoo under consumer opinion/experiences or Macy’s, you should pick it up. There are scores of complaints similar to yours and this pages also has tips on how you might possibly resolve getting your gift. Ron Ng Knows!
