Bridal Registry Dilemma

Categories: China

Question:

>Ick. I can’t quite say I don’t envy your situation (we’re coveting the Kelly >pattern ourselves), but it is kind of sticky.

Kelly? What a HIDEOUS pattern.  If it wasn’t for that little patch of blue it wouldn’t be quite so awful but that is not a pattern that will age well. You’ll look back at it in 20 years and see 90’s written all over it. If you like the pattern so well, why not go with a plain white pattern with a gold band and use Kelly salad plates as accents?  That way you’ll at least have a nice classic pattern too. Thanks everyone. I’ve gone through most of these scenarios already and I think you’re right, Hillary – there isn’t one polite way of doing this and I can see by doing one, I can face some problems. All of my guest know I work for Lenox and they know I get a discount. So if I register at a store, I can see some of them thinking it’s rude that they have to pay full price or they will know that I will return it and get the discounted china and the leftover money. (And yes, they know I’m the type of person that would do something like that.) Well, I do want them to take advantage of my discount.  Instead of paying for one place-setting, they can get three.  But I also see some of them thinking that they would normally get only one place setting as a gift and they are only going to give one, no matter how much or little they pay. (We have some cheapskate "friends" that would do something like that.) Well, I still get a discount after this sale, but it’s not  the 70% (I’m quite serious that they will probably never do this discount sale again). So, I think I’ll try to buy as much china now (we’ll just have really scrimp and save), not register at the department store for china, etc. and the rest of the china, etc., we’ll just have to buy with the gift money after the wedding with the lesser discount.   I was just hoping to take full advantage of the sale. Oh well. Again, thanks for all your responses!

*But, then her guests still spent the money on the china at regular price.  Also, *she will probably just get store credit, not a refund of the money. *I would buy what you can now with the money you have (serving pieces are usually *the things you don’t get because they are so expensive).  Then, register for *whatever is left that you want.  You will probably get it anyway.  I know you *feel like you are "jipping" your guests, but you really aren’t.  They have a *price in mind of what they will spend on you, so it really doesn’t matter that *much. Yeah, but I think she feels it would be great if her guests could get the discount, they could get more bang for the buck, right? It’s an interesting situation, but not really solvable politely as far as I can tell. I had an interesting situation come up, too. One of our guests is able to get amazing discounts on certain types of crystal. This guest told us if we chose a pattern from one of these companies, she would buy us a full set! I felt a bit squeamish about doing this, as we’d already registered for a different pattern and by changing it, I felt it would be sort of demanding that she buy us the crystal — but she *really* wanted to do it, and she was already doing the same thing for my fiance’s sister (also getting married this summer), so we went ahead and switched patterns.  –  "So that’s 2 T-1s and a newsfeed….would you like clues with that?"  Net Access…The NSP for ISPs….The NOC that rocks around the clock.

Ick. I can’t quite say I don’t envy your situation (we’re coveting the Kelly pattern ourselves), but it is kind of sticky. I don’t think it would be a good idea to spread the word like that. It would probably come off as being pretty tacky, although I know that’s not your intent. If I were in your shoes, what I would probably do is buy whatever I could afford now, go ahead and register for a few things later, and then use your regular discount to buy the rest if you receive cash gifts. Unfortunately, there’s really no polite way to request the cash now. Jennifer (and Brian) July, 2000 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hello! I have a slight dilemma with the bridal registry. I did this, sorta.  I don’t work for a glassware company, but I do have a lot of wineglasses.  I registered for everything else, except wineglasses. — Jennifer in California    | Sometimes the best gain is to lose.   http://www.oaktrees.org/

In my opinion, register at the store, and STILL buy it from where you work. When you get it as a gift, simply take it back to the store. That way, you’ll get your money back, and still get the discount. The only problem is having enough credit or money to get it now until you get "repaid" by the other gifts. Register for everything but china, flatware & stemware. Have family spread the word that you’ll be purchasing your own china.  Odds are, if you keep your registry small, you’ll get plenty of cash gifts to purchase the china yourselves.  Also, family that has heard about your desire to purchase china will also give you cash. >My big problem now is that our company is having a very rare employee sale >with the best discount they’ll ever give us (70%) until April 23, so I feel >we have to get our china etc. now.

As long as you don’t go with a pattern soon to be discontinued, you don’t have a problem. I am sure than Lenox will have another employees only sale between now and this time next year. Ron Ng Knows!

Hello! I have a slight dilemma with the bridal registry. I work for Lenox China and I can get a really nice discount off of all Lenox china, flatware, stemware – basically all tableware.  My problem is that if I register at a department store, my guests won’t be able to take advantage of my discount. And I feel ackward telling them that since they are going to be invited to our wedding (Oct.2) that they are going to give us a gift anyway, to just give us the money now so I can get it really cheap (not in these words). And both of our families would feel weird doing that for us too. My big problem now is that our company is having a very rare employee sale with the best discount they’ll ever give us (70%) until April 23, so I feel we have to get our china etc. now. And we are kind of low on cash since my FH and I are paying for the whole wedding. We can probably pay for it but we are going to be real tight with the wedding bills. So what would you do in my place? Help!! Thanks in advance for all replies!
