Registering for Lenox

Categories: China Holiday

Question:

Go ahead a get your Lenox.  I have the McKinley (12 place settings) which I purchased via the telephone at Barron’s.  I also used them for my Lenox crystal.  They pack the china very well and everything arrived safely.  If you do not get most of what you want on your registry you can use your gift $$ to complete your table.  I plan on only registering for silver place settings since I already purchased my dishes and crystal.

Response:

Lenox has outlet stores around the country where they sell seconds and overstocks.  They run huge sales at their factory stores all summer as well (huge being defined as 35-50% off!).  My parents live near their store in southern New Jersey, so I have registered for my china with my mother and not at a department store.  Our guests from that area will probably all give us china from the Factory Store.  In a lot of cases you won’t be able to tell the second from what they sell in the department stores. I’d say definitely register for it anyway!  Even if the placesettings are expensive at the store where you register, it is always possible to find   them cheaper at outlets and such.  I know a few people who found out which patterns I registered for, then bought it elsewhere.  Another friend of mine received 5 place settings of her china for the wedding, and then on anniversaries and at Christmas her mother has been buying them more pieces and settings.  Since they won’t need a full set for holiday dinners and such for the next 10 years or so, they have plenty of time to build up a set. I also registered at JC Penney, and they said that if we didn’t get enough of our china to make it worthwhile (and didn’t want to buy the rest ourselves), we could just bring it all back for a cash refund.  I don’t think it will be necessary, but it was nice to know we wouldn’t get stuck with only 2 place settings of china! Good luck! Annie (and Chuck 7/6/96….yikes!)

I kinda felt the same way about our pattern (Lenox-Citation Gold). But we actually received quite a bit of it. The guests that wanted to buy us china, but didn’t want to spend $80/place setting, bought us individual pieces. Example, one aunt bout us 2 dinner plates, another bought us 2 salad plates, etc… We finished out these place settings with a gift certificate that a friend had given us. Don’t worry about it. I would assume that you will have more than china on your registry as well, so if folks have a major problem, they will choose something else off your list. Don’t settle. Choose what you are going to like, as long as you fell that it is realistic that you can purchase (over time) what you are not given, to complete your set. Keep in mind that china is not an "investment" it really doesn’t appreciate so choose what you LIKE. Good Luck!!! Tara

Steve says… As usual this guy is wrong.  Ross Simons is consistently more expensive than many other mail order houses. Steve

Check out Ross Simons and Barrons- their regular prices are consistently below the department stores’ sale prices and they sometimes run specials on "free Shipping" too.  If you can verify that they carry your style, you can also register with them and spread the word since they are a free "800" call nationally.    And- $90. doesn’t strike me as particularly expensive for china!  There should also be other items available both in that pattern and in other areas of the home you need which would be cheaper. Hi- I’ve been looking at all the dish patterns out there and have a particular afinity for a Lenox chinastone pattern. The problem is, a placesetting costs ninety dolllars! To me this is pretty expensive. I’m worried that no one will buy (or be able to buy) a placesetting because of the cost. I don’t want to pick a pattern of something that won’t be around in 5 to 10 years, but I want to make my registry affordable so my guest will be comfortable, but I can’t really compromise what I want. Any ideas?

Response:

First of all,  $90 a place setting is really pretty reasonable, if it’s the most expensive china you are registering for.  Second, you might want to look into registering at someplace like Barron’s or Michael C. Fina, which discount china, glassware, and silver, usually at least 30%.  Barron’s has a web page–don’t remember the adress.  Hope this helps!  Catherine – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hi- I’ve been looking at all the dish patterns out there and have a >particular afinity for a Lenox chinastone pattern.
