The status of knowledge in Islam
Question:
Religion itself is often the enemy of knowledge and hence of true education. The rather well known fact that Islamic societies have a poor level of education and that those who are educated must travel to the secular democracies of the West and Asia for graduate degrees illustrates this. The great universities of the world became great by shaking off religious influences. They remain great by resisting religious influences. That is why Muslims, especially Muslim students, want to not only study in the secular democracies but also remain to live there after graduation. They do not wish to return to Islamic societies where arranged marriages are used to encourage, nurture, and perpetuate RACISM and SEXISM and where true education is impossible because freedom is not tolerated. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >The status of knowledge in Islam >By Muhammad Siddique Fazal >Knowledge has been given the topmost place in Islam. Response:
The status of knowledge in Islam By Muhammad Siddique Fazal Knowledge has been given the topmost place in Islam. It is knowledge which enables a person to distinguish between the good and the bad and restrains him from betraying the true path. Even then, if the knowledge he owns is not perfect, then his religion will also be imperfect and all the actions of the person will be proved futile. Knowledge is the only way to learn the pleasure of Allah and his commandments and to keep away from the things which are disallowed by Him. To know the personality and attributes of Allah is not possible without knowledge. That is why knowledge has been given the highest place in Islam. As a matter of fact, knowledge is a guardian and protector of religion. It is a remarkable quality of Islam that it has convinced the people to gain knowledge in a peculiar way of which no other religion of the world can present a little resemblance. As Islam is the latest religion and the Holy Qur’aan is the last heavenly Book, therefore, it was necessary to keep its teachings pure and clean from adulteration of foreign ideas in it till the Day of Judgement, so that the spiritual force and the impression of the Holy Qur’aan may be achieved by everyone in the world. Had such precautions not been kept in view, Islam would have abandoned its spirituality, excellence and ability like Judaism and Christianity did. In Islam, not only the benefits and preferences of knowledge are upheld but its harms and mischiefs are also pointed out in details. It is a great warning to those who are working in the field of knowledge. The purpose of showing the pitfalls of knowledge is to guide the students on the true path, so that they may not betray or adopt a wrong one. Instead, the people of knowledge should know their responsibilities and fulfil them throughly. The Holy Qur’aan is the axis and centre of our all religions and judicial, intellectual and social activities. It has the capability to solve all the problems regarding our lives, because it is a wholesome and eternal Book of life which guides the human beings throughout the life. It is because of the knowledge which Allah Almighty has revealed in the Holy Qur’aan through His Messenger, Muhammad (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam), that comprises all about the past, present and future equally. That is why the solution of all the problems arising in a particular age can be found in it. It is the most perfect guide for the people of all ages. It is a pity and misfortune that we have left seeking guidance from this book regarding day to day problems of our lives. That is why the Muslims are standing upon a crossroad quite perplexed and do not know their destination, although their destination is not far from where they are standing. It is a place whose location has already been charted out in the Holy Qur’aan. But we have broken our relation with this Book. Therefore, it has become a stranger to us. If we continued to ignore the book in finding the solution of our educational, social and economical problems, we will be degraded day by day and shall stand no where in the community of nations. The values of knowledge have been changed in the modern age. Its face has been distorted. Now, it has become necessary to purify and reform our educational system. It requires an operation on wider scale, so that the impurity may be removed and the pure shape may come out from it. We are not barred from achieving the worldly benefits, but they must be gained according to the canons of Islam. The objective of writing these lines is to seek the pleasure of Allah. If these objectives and aims are not achieved, the status of education in our society will not gain any prominence. Before you buy.
