I’ve not been to Japan, but I’ve travelled a lot with my small children. I would suggest taking a stroller (pushchair) for even such a young baby. If nothing else, it gives you someplace to put all your miscellaneous "stuff" that you need with a baby, while you carry the child! I’ve never had any trouble with the airlines over a folding stroller. The biggest problem with such a young child is you can’t use an umbrella stroller which is the most convenient for travel, you’ll need one with a solid back. I’ve had the best luck with a 30 year old stroller that my mother had. It is much more sturdy than the newer ones, folds down easily, has a pullout bottom shelf. It makes a great luggage cart! The first trip to London with a baby, I got a used stroller at a garage sale for $5. We beat it up bouncing it up and down curbs, etc and then threw it away over there. The nice thing about used stuff is you really don’t care what happens to it! –linda–

Throughout Asia the most common method is to use a carrier that straps to your chest or back. In my opinion it is much more convenient and enjoyable both for you and your baby than using a carriage. It allows you and your baby to be in constant touch. If you cannot find one locally, you can easily find one in any department store throughout asia. Be forewarned though that prices in Japanese department stores are probably higher than what you would pay locally.
